A Successful Anesthetic Technique in a Patient with a Giant Emphysematouis Bulla

Resident Research Coordinator:
Indu Singh MD FRCPC

Anesthesia residents are actively encouraged to complete and present at least one research project during their 5 yrs of residency training. Projects can include benchside research, clinical research trials, quality assurance projects, systematic reviews, and case reports. Research opportunities are available in all subspeciality areas of anesthesia. Residents are encouraged to seek mentors and supervisors early. Protected time can be made available during the residency for research activity.

Residents are encouraged to present at Anesthesia meetings. Financial support is available. Popular venues for presentation include Mac-Western Resident Research Day Exchange, Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society Annual Meeting, and the Midwest Anesthesia Resident Conference (MARC) in the USA.

Mac-Western Resident Research Day Exchange: This is held yearly with McMaster University with the site alternating between the two campuses.  Research and academic projects are presented and judged, with the top three receiving prizes.  A recognized researcher is invited to speak and to be an assessor at the Research Competition. A dinner and friendly anesthesia trivia challenge follows the presentations.

UWO Presenters and their Presentations in 2009:

Dr. Amanda Smitheram, “Anesthetic management of a child for esophagectomy”

Dr. Phil Kruger, “Anesthetic management for cesarean delivery in a parturient with Andersen-Tawil syndrome”

Dr. Tim Maxwell, “A successful anesthetic technique in a patient with giant bullous emphysema”

Dr. Marcos Silva, “Anesthetic management of cerebellar AVM during pregnancy” and “Ultrasound guided TAP blocks for post CS pain relief: a pilot study”

Dr. Collin Clarke, “Virtual reality imaging with real time ultrasound for facet joint injection- a proof of concept”

Dr. Diem Tran, “Arterial pCO2 changes during thoracoscopic surgery with CO2 insufflation and one lung ventilation”

Dr. Kristine Marmai, “Anesthetic considerations in a child with congenital insensitivity to pain”

Dr. Kenneth Ryan, “The frequency of post-operative hypoxemia in patients with OSA”

The  1st prize winner of the 2009 Mac-Western Resident Research Day Exchange was Dr. Collin Clarke. The 2nd prize winner was Dr. Kenneth Ryan.

Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society Annual Meeting: Residents are encouraged to present at this meeting. Presenters at the 2009 Vancouver meeting included Drs. Phil Kruger, Tim Maxwell, and Collin Clarke. Collin won 2nd prize at the CAS Resident Competition for his presentation titled " Virtual reality imaging with real-time ultrasound for facet joint injection - proof of concept".

The Midwest Anesthesia Resident Conference (MARC): This provides residents in the Midwestern area Anesthesia training programs (and some Canadian) with a platform to participate in the scholarly activity of presenting clinical and basic science research related to the specialty of anesthesiology. Residents, fellows, medical students and faculty of over 30 academic institutions convene over a weekend each spring to present scientific abstracts, including case reports, and attend educational panels. In the 2009 meeting at Chicago, presenters included Drs. Amanda Smitheram, Phil Kruger, Tim Maxwell, Marcos Silva and Kristine Marmai. Kristine won 1st prize for her case report titled “Anesthetic considerations for a child with congenital insensitivity to pain.”

To support their research endeavours, residents are encouraged to apply for research grants available from the CAS when appropriate. Successful applicants have included Drs. Collin Clarke, Tim Turksta, and Geoff Bellingham.

During the academic year, consultant anesthesiologists are invited to speak to the residents regarding their individual current research projects. Recent speakers have included Drs. Murkin, Arango, Ganapathy, Singh, and S. Dhir. A lecture on ethics in human research is given to junior residents by Dr. Singh.
